The 4th of July can be an exciting time for people to celebrate the independence of our country but it can also be a very frightening time for our furry family members. Below is our top 5 tips for helping your pet cope with all the ruckus and keeping them calm;

  1. Ambient sound: playing music or having the T.V. on creates an atmosphere of ambient noise that can help to distract your pet from the banging of fireworks. So, put on your favorite record, turn up your Spotify music, or watch a few episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix, it will definitely help

  2. Talking to your pet: staying calm and talking to your pet helps to relax them. If they see that you are calm, and if you help to calm them whenever there is a loud sound, it will help to lessen their anxiety over time

  3. Positive reinforcement: try rewarding your furry little family member with a treat when there is a loud sound. This will help to create positive feedback where instead of relating the sound with fright or anxiety, they associate it will a positive action

  4. Provide a safe place: make sure you pet has a place they can go to feel safe throughout the holiday and reward them when they go there. This way they will not have to resort to finding random hiding places and will have a place to go to find comfort. Lining their safe place with familiar smells is always a good idea too.

  5. Communication: if possible, talk to your neighbors and see if they can keep their festivities to certain times or days. This will help you to plan for the event and take proactive action to support your pet through the holiday
